Do a quick wardrobe declutter

Before you start to organise your clothes, do a declutter of the clothes you already have, which will make organising clothing so much easier and faster.

You don’t have to declutter all of your clothing at once, instead choose one category of clothing, area of your wardrobe, or one drawer that’s overflowing, and ask yourself the following questions for each item:

  • Do I wear this?
  • Does it fit?
  • Is it in wearable condition?

If you answer no to any of these questions, place the item in a donation bag, and once the bag’s full take it straight to a donation centre, making sure you recycle any items that are damaged.

To do this, set a timer for 10 minutes and declutter as much as you can in this time. Doing multiple 10 minute decluttering sessions over a few days until every area of your wardrobe and drawers are decluttered, means you have less clothing to organise, and it’s a great home organisation habit to get into.

Organise clothes by group and colour

One of the ways I organise clothes, that makes finding what I want to wear super easy, is organising clothing by group and colour.

Organising by group means storing clothing that’s the same together, for example storing these items together:

  • Trousers, leggings, jeans, and shorts
  • T-shirts, blouses, and shirts
  • Jumpers
  • Long and short skirts
  • Long and short dresses
  • Socks and underwear

Once you’ve organised your clothes by group, you can then sort them by colour.

For example, I hang my trousers from dark to light, so if you’re looking in my wardrobe, from left to right you’d see black, green, then beige trousers hanging next to each other.

Organise by season

Another wardrobe organising idea is to organise clothes by season, which is a great way to organise clothes if you have limited space, or you live somewhere with definite seasons.

You can organise clothes by season by dividing clothing into summer and winter clothes, and storing away clothes that aren’t in season.

For example, in summer you’d have dresses and shorts in your wardrobe or drawers, and you’d store winter clothing like coats and jumpers out of sight, such as in under bed clothing storage.

Utilise wardrobe organisers

One of the best ways to organise your wardrobe is to use products that are designed with wardrobe and drawer organisation in mind.

Here are some great clothing organisational tools you can use to organise your wardrobe, and keep your wardrobe organised for a long time.

Hangers

Using mismatched or wide hangers can take up a lot of space in your wardrobe.

Instead, consider using non slip hangers, or multi-layer hangers, which make your wardrobe look neater, and saves space.

When hanging clothes hang items you wear the most at eye level, so they’re easy to find, especially on busy mornings.

Drawer dividers

I love using drawer dividers for small items of clothing like socks and underwear, which is not only a great laundry hack, but allows me to keep these types of clothing items in one place.

I use a combination of small drawer organisers, and cardboard boxes that I received gifts in to organise my smaller items of clothing.

Hooks

Hooks are something you may not consider when thinking about wardrobe organising, but hooks inside your wardrobe are great for storing necklaces, ties, scarves, and belts.

Hanging organisers

Hanging organisers are another great wardrobe organiser, and can be used to hang shoes, jumpers, towels, and bulky winter items.

Over the door storage

One last wardrobe organising solution that I love and use to organise kid’s clothes is over the door storage with pockets.

These can be used to organise shoes, socks, accessories, hats, and scarves.

Do regular clothing clear outs

Once you’ve organised your clothes a regular clothing clear out is a time saving habit to get into.

Regularly clearing out your wardrobe and drawers by removing what you don’t wear, what doesn’t fit, or before adding new items of clothing to your wardrobe or drawers, prevents clothing clutter, and helps you to maintain the organised wardrobe or drawer you worked so hard to achieve.

Smart ways to organise clothes – a recap

Utilising any of these wardrobe organising tips will help you create a wardrobe and drawers that not only look tidy, but will help you get ready quicker.

Quick decluttering, regular clear outs, and organising clothing by group and colour, or by season, makes finding outfits simple, while wardrobe organisers like hangers, drawer dividers, hooks, hanging organisers, and over the door storage helps everything stay in its place.

With a little bit of effort and consistency, you’ll be able to maintain an organised wardrobe that simplifies your mornings, and helps you to tackle the day.

Which of these clothing organisation tips would make the biggest difference to your wardrobe?
