What does a simpler home mean?

Creating a simpler home means creating a home that’s easy to manage.

Some examples of a simpler home include:

  • Having less items to clean and organise
  • Spending less time looking for lost items
  • Creating storage systems that the whole family can use
  • Having routines in place that keep your home running smoothly

For some families a simpler home may mean owning fewer possessions. For others it may mean implementing organisation systems so everything can be found when needed.

The goal of having a simpler home is to create a home that feels calmer, more functional, and easier to maintain, so you spend less time managing your home, and more time enjoying it.

Start small

One of the biggest mistakes people make when thinking about trying to simplify their homes is attempting to tackle everything at once.

Instead, start by simplifying a small area of your home, to make the process less overwhelming.

Some small areas you can start with include:

Declutter regularly

Decluttering is my favourite way to keep my home simple, as the fewer items you own, the fewer things you need to organise, store, and maintain.

I ask myself the following questions when deciding what items to declutter from my home:

  • Do I use this?
  • Do I love this?
  • Do I need this?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, then I add the item to one of the following piles:

  • Donate
  • Sell
  • Recycle
  • Bin

Once finished I place the donate pile items in my car, list items for sale in my sell pile, and dispose of items in the recycle and bin piles.

Create daily habits

When thinking about how to organise your home and make it simpler, daily habits help a great deal.

Some easy daily habits you can try to reduce household clutter include:

  • Putting groceries away immediately
  • Loading dishes straight into the dishwasher
  • Removing items from rooms they don’t belong in
  • Doing a 15 minute home reset each evening

Give everything a home

This is one of my favourite home organisation tips, which is to make sure every item in your house has a designated place, and ensuring everything is back in its place at the end of the night.

When items don’t have a designated place, they often end up on kitchen counters, dining tables, or any other surface, creating visual clutter.

Some examples of homes for items include:

Be intentional with purchases

Creating a simpler home isn’t just about removing clutter. It’s also about preventing unnecessary clutter from entering your home in the first place.

Before buying something ask yourself:

  • Do I really need this?
  • Do I own something similar?
  • Where will it be stored?
  • Will it make life easier or more complicated?

Being intentional with purchases helps reduce clutter, save money, and make your home easier to manage.

How to create a simpler home – a recap

Creating a simpler home doesn’t require a complete home overhaul, it only requires small, consistent actions over time.

Whether you start by decluttering one drawer, starting a few daily habits, giving items a home, or becoming more intentional with purchases, every small step moves you closer to a simpler home.

  1. Some great tips here! I particularly like the 15 mins timer cleaning idea! To some extent I tend to this anyway – but I’d imagine setting myself up with a timer, would improve my speed!
