Backs of doors

I love using backs of doors as extra storage space, and using door space is particularly a great backpack storage idea for small spaces, because it doesn’t require floor space.

To do this you can use over door hooks, or an over door hanging organiser to hang backpacks on the backs of wardrobe doors, bedroom doors, front doors, or a door of a room your kids have to walk through each day when leaving for school.

Walls

Another great backpack storage idea for small spaces are walls.

You can do this by attaching hooks, or using wall mounted shelves and hooks to not only store backpacks, but also to store lunchboxes, water bottles, and other school supplies.

Wardrobes

You can store backpacks in unused space in a wardrobe by hanging backpacks on hangers, installing hooks on the backs of wardrobe doors, or using hanging organisers to hold backpacks, school shoes, and other school supplies.

Vertical drawers

A cost effective and space saving backpack storage idea are vertical drawers, which can also be easily moved around your home if you decide to change where they’re located.

Under beds

Storing backpacks under beds is another great backpack storage idea, especially if you’re short on space.

You can store backpacks under beds by using a rolling storage bin, or simply placing backpacks under your kid’s beds.

As backpacks are under your kid’s beds, this option enables them to put their own bags away, and get them each morning, which is not only a daily habit to keep your home tidy, but also helps them to learn how to be responsible for their belongings.

Coat racks

As well as storing school coats, you can also use coat racks to hang backpacks, which is a great way to simplify your home, because you can use one product in multiple ways.

Furniture with hidden storage

Furniture with hidden storage is another item that has multiple uses, and is perfect for storing backpacks out of sight:

Baskets

Sometimes the simplest storage solutions are the best, and baskets are definitely a simple, cost effective way to store backpacks.

You can use woven, fabric, or plastic baskets in any room of your home that suits you, and make using the basket part of your kid’s school morning routine, by getting your kids to retrieve their backpack each morning.

Dedicated drop zone

Once you’ve decided how you’re going to store backpacks, create a dedicated drop zone in your home.

A drop zone is an area of your home where your kid’s school backpacks are kept, and you may even decide to keep other items in this zone to help with other areas of family organisation, that you need each morning like:

  • Coats
  • Hats
  • Keys
  • Lunchboxes
  • Shoes
  • Work bags

My dedicated drop zone is in my entryway, where I use hooks behind my front door to hang backpacks, and next to my front door I use this storage unit to store school shoes, my keys, and school paperwork
