Why does supply organisation matter?
As well as homework, school supplies can be used for craft projects, assignments, permission slips, or like in my house, whenever a creative mood strikes.
Without an organisation system in place for school supplies, they can quickly become scattered throughout your entire home, and any family organisation systems you have in place when it comes to school admin can take longer.
When you organise school supplies at home you:
- Feel much better about being prepared for back to school
- Make homework a less stressful part of your after school routines
- Can tick school supply organisation activities off your routine checklists
- Save time looking for items
- Avoid buying duplicates
- Reduce homework frustration
- Keep your home looking less cluttered
What’s the best way to organise school supplies?
The best school supply organisation system is one that’s:
- Easy for your kids to use
- Quick to tidy up
- Simple to maintain
- Located where the supplies are needed
- Adaptable as your school supply needs change

Here are 5 simple ways to organise school supplies at home to help minimise homework stress, and to help prevent your home from being cluttered by these regularly used items.
Homework station
A homework station is an area in your home where your kid’s school supplies, books, and anything they need to complete their homework is kept.
It typically comprises of a table and chair, plus all the school supplies your kids need to do their homework without distractions.
Here are some ideas of where you can place your homework area:
- Under a staircase
- In an unused corner
- On part of the kitchen counter
- On a small desk

School supply storage
Using storage specifically for school supplies helps your kids put their supplies away fast, and ensures everything is in one place, making it easier for your kids to access what they need, when they need it.
Some of my favourite school supply storage solutions are a:
- Stationery desk organiser perfect for adding to your homework station
- Rolling cart that enables you to move school supplies to wherever they’re needed
- Stationery caddy which can be moved around and fits in small spaces
- Clear storage containers so your kids can see what supplies are inside them
Organise by category
Another great way to organise school supplies is by category.
Some categories you can organise by are:
- Writing supplies – pencil cases, pencils, pens, highlighters, sharpeners, erasers
- Craft supplies – ruler, glue sticks, scissors, sticky tape
- Paper supplies – notebooks, post it notes, binders, paper
- Technology supplies – calculators, chargers, headphones
Restock basket
I love having back up school supplies on hand for when school supplies go missing, or when they suddenly run out.
However, back up school supplies also need to be organised, and a great way to do this is to store them in a basket or container that you keep in an area of your home that’s easy to access, but out of everyday reach.

Declutter every term
Another way to organise school supplies at home is to go through your supplies at the end of each term and remove:
- Broken items
- Empty containers
- Finished notebooks
- Dried up pens
- Unused worksheets
