How to be organised as a mum

Here are simple 10 simple ways to be more organised as a mum, which you can pick and choose from until you find the combination that works best for you.

Create a weekly meal plan

Creating a weekly meal plan is something I do every Sunday, as it significantly helps me organise family life.

Some of the benefits of weekly meal planning are:

  • You don’t have to spend time thinking about what to cook every night
  • It saves time, money, and reduces stress by only buying what you need

Use a family calendar everyone can see

Using a family calendar is a great way to keep track of school runs, appointments, extra-curricular activities, and anything else you need to remember to keep family life on track.

A visible family calendar like a digital calendar, or a magnetic fridge calendar, enables everyone to see what’s going on, ensuring everyone stays organised.

Make sure every item has a home

Another habit of organised mums, and one that I love, is making sure every item within my home has a place, and making sure that at the end of each night every item is where it belongs.

Some examples of this can be:

  • Keeping school lunch items in the same drawer
  • Having a stair basket where you place items that need to be taken upstairs

Keep a daily to do list

One of the first things that comes to mind when I ask myself how to get organised is writing a to do list, which is another great habit of organised mums.

When keeping a daily to do list, write down the things you want to get done, and then highlight the top 3 priorities you need to focus on, so you stay focused and avoid overwhelm, even on your busiest days.

When writing your to do list you can use a to do list notepad, a daily planner or sticky notes.

Speed clean regularly

Rather than letting mess build up, do quick 5–10 minute tidies throughout the day, during times that suit you.

I do two speed cleans each day, one after breakfast and then another before bed, where I clean the kitchen, tidy the living room, and put toys away.

Prepare the night before

Preparing for the morning the night before is another one of my top ways to organise your family.

Here are some things I prepare the night before that you may like to consider as well:

  • Lay out school clothes
  • Fill water bottles
  • Prepare school lunches and place them in the fridge
  • Prepare breakfast items such as cutting fruit, making overnight oats, or boiling eggs
  • Pack school bags and leave them at the door

Build a simple morning routine

Having a morning routine in place where you wake up 15 minutes before your family and do something that you enjoy, such as drinking a hot beverage, doing a quick tidy up, or planning your day, helps you feel more organised, and less rushed.

Some other ideas you can incorporate into a morning routine could be:

  • Reading a few pages of a book
  • Setting intentions for the day
  • Doing some journaling
  • Doing some gentle exercise
Office with lamp, stationery, and laptop - items you need to be organised.

Schedule household chores to spread the load

If you’re thinking about how to get organised, a great idea is to schedule your household chores across different days, as this helps you stay organised without burning out.

Some of the chores I schedule are laundry on Wednesdays and Saturdays, changing beds on Sundays, dusting on Tuesdays, and cleaning floors on Sundays.

Use small pockets of time wisely

Small pockets of time are great opportunities to do tasks. If you have a spare 5–10 minutes you can sort mail, check your planner, wipe surfaces, or prep dinner.

Little pockets of time add up, and help you to be organised.

End the day with less chaos

A quick tidy before bed where you put toys away, sort school bags, hang coats, and do anything else you didn’t get to throughout the day makes the next morning easier, and your home calmer and more organised.

How to be organised as a mum – a recap

Being an organised mum is about creating sustainable habits that make family life calmer and more enjoyable.

By implementing just a few of the steps above, like doing a weekly meal plan, using a family calendar, speed cleaning, or preparing the night before, you’ll start to feel more organised and less overwhelmed.

  2. I’m always on the lookout for ways to be more organized, so this is great advice. Writing everything down and making to-do lists is something I do as often as possible, otherwise, things fall by the wayside. Making a cleaning schedule is something I need to do because right now I clean at random times and places and it doesn’t always work well that way.

  3. Fantastic post on how to be a more organized mom. We are always so busy anymore that it helps to be as organized as possible. I am now a Mimi (Grandma), but when my kids were younger, I implemented a color for each of my children’s activities in my planner. This helped to quickly peruse the daily comings and goings. I clicked over to your post on making weekly meal plans as well. Your posts are so very helpful…thank you for sharing!
